Advocacy

The Report on the Parliamentary Inquiry into Allergies and Anaphylaxis has been developed by the Australian governement, as a result of advocacy over several years. This advocacy was initiated by ASCIA members (including A/Prof Richard Loh and other ASCIA Presidents, past and current), the National Allergy Strategy and the national patient organisation, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia.

A great deal of work has occurred behind the scenes which has resulted in:

  • The announcement of the Parliamentary Inquiry into Allergies and Anaphylaxis in Australia at the ASCIA Annual Conference in September 2019,

  • Submissions lodged by ASCIA, the National Allergy Strategy, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, other organisations and individuals to the Inquiry.

  • Inquiry public hearings held between October 2019 and February 2020, and

  • Publishing of the attached Report on the Parliamentary Inquiry into Allergies and Anaphylaxis Walking the allergy tightrope - Addressing the rise of allergies and anaphylaxis in Australia This report was tabled on Monday 15 June 2020 and tabled in the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia.

ASCIA lodged a submission to this inquiry and welcomes the recommendations in the Report. These recommendations address 90% of the issues raised in ASCIA’s submission, and recognise ASCIA’s pivotal and leading role in improving the care of Australians with allergic disease.

ASCIA is looking forward to working closely with the Australian Government over the coming months to develop a comprehensive plan to implement the recommendations in the Report, including recommendations that specifically relate to issues raised in ASCIA’s submission.
