Dear Friends and Colleagues,


Warm Greetings from APAAACI.


We are almost at the end of 2020 and no one would have predicted this year to be what it turned out to be. With just a few more weeks to go, it can be imagined that most of us are happy to see this year pass and look forward to starting a new chapter in 2021. We appreciate the many colleagues and health care workers who have been fighting on the frontlines and bereave those who lost their lives in doing so.


In the midst of this global pandemic of COVID-19 and the challenges posed, APAAACI has been active on many fronts and has been able to achieve some excellent milestones including progress on the e-learning front, with numerous resources, web lectures, literature highlights, the APAAACI journal, motivational talks, collaborations with our member societies and global bodies and many other expansions.


APAAACI’s leadership and board have been meeting regularly to discuss and take forward our initiatives. Our committees have been working hard to develop surveys and publications on key topics in our specialty and in training.


Our website now contains a growing number of global reference materials and APAAACI TV has an increasing number of outstanding state of the art Lectures by global experts on a variety of topics including COVID-19. The organization has been active since its foundation 30 years ago and we recommend that you review our APAAACI History Book, if you have not done so before.

APAAACI Joins the Global Urticaria Guideline Initiative: EAACI/GA2LEN/EUROGUIDERM/ APAAACI

The 6th Consensus Conference on the update and revision of the international EAACI/GA2LEN/EUROGUIDERM/APAAACI guideline for Urticaria took place in Berlin on 3 December. APAAACI 2021 International Conference

Following the very successful APAAACI 2019 International Conference in Beijing, APAAACI will continue the International conferences. The APAAACI 2021 International Conference will be jointly hosted by APAAACI and the Taiwan Academy of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology (TAAACI) from October 15-17, 2021 as APAAACI 2021 International Conference joint TAAACI. We remain optimistic about some return to normal and to have a largely in-person conference next year. Find Out More


APAAACI 2022 Congress

APAAACI will have its biennial congress APAAACI 2022 Congress PSAAAI@50 in Manila from 1-4 October 2022. The Congress will be jointly hosted by APAAAACI and the Philippine Society of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (PSAAI) that will also be the Golden Jubilee celebration of the PSAAI. APAAACI Reflections of 2020


Despite the challenge of the global pandemic this year, APAAACI has forged forward with numerous initiatives, publications and collaborations 2020 .



APAAACI Publications


APAAACI White Paper 2020 on Climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity in Asia-Pacific and impact on allergic diseases (7 February). The APAAACI White Paper 2020 highlights the most current status of climate change, air pollution and its impact on respiratory allergies across countries in the Asia Pacific (AP) region and calls to action the relevant authorities and governments as well as global bodies like the WHO and UN towards addressing this important health and environment burden in the AP region


Drug Allergy Diagnostic Procedures & Practices Paper (October)

Prof. Bernard Thong, Chair of our Drug Allergy Committee led the publication of the Drug Allergy committee-initiated paper on the regional aspects titled Drug Allergy Diagnostic Procedures & Practices in the October issue of our APAAACI Journal AP Allergy.



APAAACI Collaborations


APAAACI-WEA Collaboration Release (April)

Following a collaboration initiated in 2019 with the Workshop on Eosinophils in Allergy and Related Diseases (WEA) led by Prof. Makoto Nagata (Japan) APAAACI published the proceedings of the WEA 2019 Annual meeting annual meeting of WEA, Tokyo 2019 in the April issue of APAAACI’s official journal Asia Pacific Allergy. The issue comprised of selected papers covering different aspects of eosinophil science ranging from mechanisms of eosinophilic inflammation to eosinophilic inflammation in asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis, urticaria, and impact of environmental factors on eosinophilic inflammation.


APAAACI-EAACI SS Symposium (6-8 June)

APAAACI concluded very successful activities at EAACI 2020 and proudly presented the latest white paper on Climate change, Air pollution and its impact on respiratory allergies in Asia Pacific. APAAACI talks included House dust mite Allergy in Asia Pacific and Chronic urticaria in Asia Pacific. All talks were welcomed by an overwhelming positive response from the attendees in several thousands. All our sessions were very well received with numerous questions and many positive comments.


Mongolian Society of Allergy (MSA) Joint APAAACI Virtual Meeting 2020 (3 July)

APAAACI collaborated with MSA in the MSA Virtual Allergy Seminar 2020, 3rd July, 2020. The MSA-APAAACI Joint symposium was an outstanding scientific success. Held as a virtual meeting, it covered COVID-19 Cytokine Storm and Management in the Context of Allergy and Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma and other topics relevant to the daily practice of allergy. We thank Prof. Munkhbayalarakh and his team for the collaboration.


Philippine Society of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology (PSAAI) - National Allergy Day 2020: A Public Awareness Event (12 July)

APAAACI congratulated and joined the Philippine Society of Allergy Asthma and Clinical Immunology (PSAAI) in celebrating the National Allergy Day ( a public awareness event) on July 12, 2020 on the topic ‘Allergies sa panahonng COVID-19’. A highly successful public event where key speakers from PSAAI leadership highlighted the most important information on allergic diseases essential for creating greater awareness on allergies for patients and the general public.


APAAACI-ISAI-JACIN Virtual Symposium:

The Microbiome, Prevention, and Future Therapies of Allergy (3 October)

APAAACI collaborated with the Indonesian Society of Allergy and Immunology (ISAI) and JACIN with a joint symposium outlining 'The Microbiome, Prevention and the future therapies of Allergies' on 3rd October 2020. The live virtual symposium presented some of the top experts in our field including Professor Carina Venter, our very own president, Professor Ruby Pawankar, President-Elect, Professor Jiu-Yao Wang, and APAACI international Advisors Professor Alessandro G. Fiocchi, Italy and Professor Carina Venter (US). Over 652 delegates attended, and the lectures were well appreciated with a lively informative discussion. With the time differences, our international speakers contributed at even odd hours. We are grateful to them for the same.


PSAAI Virtual Convention 2020: Allergy & Immunology: Facing The Challenge of The New Normal (14-15 October)

The Philippine Society of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (PSAAI) organized their annual congress on 'Allergy & Immunology: Facing The Challenge of The New Normal' as a virtual convention on 14-15 October 2020. APAAACI supported by promoting the congress. The event was an outstanding success, with four of our key international speakers including Prof. Hugo Van Bever, Prof. Marcus Maurer, Prof. Luz M. Sison Fonacier and Prof. Ruby Pawankar, and several national speakers covered various topics in allergy asthma and clinical immunology. and with over 5,400 delegates from over 36 countries attended this virtual congress. We thank Prof. Marysia Recto, Racquel Salvador-Tayag and their team for the excellent collaboration.


APAAACI and ALLERGY IN ICD-11

The main outcome of this process of the Allergy in ICD-11 initiative has been the construction of the pioneer Allergic and hypersensitivity conditions section within the new chapter, Disorders of the Immune System, which has been incorporated into ICD-11. APAAACI continues to collaborate with ANAPHYLAXIS and ALLERGYI in ICD-11 in the many publications and newsletters. ICD-11 led by Prof. Luciana Tanno and Prof. Pascal Demoly has been a key game changer helped change the recognition of allergy by WHO and its member states. GLOBAL This year APAAACI collaborated especially in the Global implementation of the WHO’s International Classification of Diseases ICD-11: the allergic and hypersensitivity conditions model.

APAAACI and INUNUMA at the first Molecular Allergology Workshop 2020, Moscow, Russia

The event was dedicated to the development of new strategies for the allergic diseases diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The Congress had presentations that highlighted the importance for the progress in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and includes new information on COVID-19. The event was in collaboration with FSBI NRC “Institute of Immunology” FMBA of Russia and of the Non-profit public organization Russian Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (RAACI). At a PLENARY SESSION #1 Allergies and Infections Prof. Rudolf Valenta, M. R Khaitov, M. Rothenberg and R. Pawankar spoke on different aspects from molecular allergology to COVID-19.

APAAACI Committee Activities

This year the APAAACI Committees have initiated several projects and conducted a total of 11 surveys led and developed by the Chairs and Members of our many Committees. I would like to thank the APAAACI committee chairs and members for their hard work, and our member societies for sharing their time and expertise in completing the surveys to support us in our projects.


Our many committee leaders and members are working hard to analyze the survey results to develop consensus documents/state of the art review papers and implement other initiatives. We deeply appreciate their valuable time and efforts in APAAACI’s efforts for the region.

Literature Highlights

Our Web editors Prof. Bernard Thong and Prof. Amir HA Latiff have been working tirelessly to develop various web features as well as the literature highlights. Several junior members are supporting them in these initiatives. I thank them very much for their leadership in doing so.


APAAACI Journal is the Asia Pacific Allergy Journal (https://www.apallergy.org/).

The APAAACI journal is our flagship journal that is now 10 years since its launch. Led by Prof. Yoon-Seok Chang for the last several years with several editors and an excellent editorial board and panel of reviewers, the journal is forging forward not only with articles from the region but beyond. The journal has published key editorials, reviews, original papers, case reports, educational papers and letters . The journal will also be publishing several committee generated manuscripts.
